As the Academic Director of the Centre for Responsible Leadership at Imperial College Business School, I am committed to helping businesses redefine leadership in ways that align with the values we champion. At the Centre, we bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world practice, focusing on driving meaningful change within organisations. Through rigorous, evidence-based research, public speaking and writing, and leadership development programs, we help businesses tackle today’s most pressing economic, social, environmental, and technological challenges. Our goal is to guide organisations toward leadership practices that not only enhance their performance but also foster a positive and ethical global future.
What is Responsible Leadership?
Leaders are responsible when they:
Leaders are responsible when they:
- Possess a strong moral foundation and manage ethical complexities with thoughtfulness and care;
- Do not shy away from engaging with challenging
- Are self-aware, understanding how their actions have the potential to affect others;
- Prioritise those they serve over themselves;
- Listen to and incorporate diverse perspectives from all stakeholders;
- Make decisions with long-term sustainability in mind.
Facilitating Constructive Challenge: Concrete ways leaders recruit (and repress) speaking up
In August 2024, The Centre for Responsible Leadership published a white paper titled Facilitating Constructive Challenge: Concrete Ways Leaders Recruit (and Repress) Speaking Up. This paper addresses the gap in practical guidance for leaders seeking to foster a culture of healthy challenge within their organisations. Conducted in collaboration with the Financial Services Culture Board and a large financial services firm, the study explores actionable strategies for encouraging open communication and rigorous challenge, crucial for strengthening risk management, decision-making, and organisational resilience.
Leadership Generations
The Centre for Responsible Leadership is hosting Leadership Generations, a series of fireside chats featuring leaders from different generations, each bringing unique perspectives on key aspects of leadership. This series offers fresh insights into alternative approaches that challenge the status quo, spotlighting practical strategies anyone can use to inspire others and achieve shared goals. Whether you're an experienced leader, an emerging one, or simply passionate about making a difference, Leadership Generations provides a gateway to responsible and innovative leadership.
So far, Leadership Generations has featured two events. In the first, Leading without Formal Authority, I engaged with Jack Blyzinkskyj and Mary Meaney, two leaders who achieved significant community impact without relying on formal authority or rewards. The second event, The Power of Connection, showcased Diane Morgan and Farhan Lalji, who discussed how social connection can profoundly enhance leadership capability.
